Book Review of Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)

Book Review: Unravel Me (Shatter Me #2) by Tahereh Mafi

Ah, Unravel Me. The second installment in Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me series, it caught my attention with its alluring cover and intriguing premise. I dove into this buddy read with my dear friend Layla, who, bless her heart, endured my over-the-top rants at 2 AM, complete with all-caps frustrations. I have to say, though, after turning the last page, I found myself wishing I could go back and un-read it. My merciful rating of 0.5 stars? That might just be Kenji’s presence saving the day!

Let me be straightforward: this book is a mess. I’m not one to throw around hyperboles, but words cannot convey the mental torture I experienced while navigating Juliette’s whiny, angst-filled journey. Our protagonist spends the first half of the book more concerned with her romantic dilemmas than the actual rebellion swirling around her. Seriously, sweet Juliette, if I have to read about one more of your melodramatic makeouts with Adam, I might lose it! The love triangle here is a heavy cloud that overshadows any meaningful story development, turning what could have been an engaging rebellion narrative into a cluttered soap opera.

And let’s talk about Adam. Oh, sweet Adam. I once thought myself to be on Team Adam, but by the end, I found him to be little more than a frustrating simp. His constant proclamations of love as he begs Juliette to take him back are cringeworthy at best. It seems like Mafi decided to make Warner more likable—somehow—while Adam merely became a cardboard cutout of naive affection. The shift in Warner’s character was just too much; his “redemption” came off as convenient rather than earned.

Now, don’t get me started on the writing. Mobile prose accentuated by over-the-top metaphors turned reading into a chore. And all those eye descriptions? I’m left traumatized. Juliette’s fixation on the color of her love interests’ eyes is an unnecessary distraction that derailed my focus on what the actual plot was supposed to be. I’m pretty sure I never want to read about pupils and irises ever again, thanks.

If you enjoy high-stakes dramas filled with a tangle of romantic conflicts, Unravel Me may be for you—but for anyone who values plot, character growth, and coherent world-building, I highly suggest steering clear. My personal moment of clarity amid this chaos came in the form of Kenji Kishimoto, hands down the most delightful character in this mess. He’s like a refreshing breath of air amidst a smog of overly dramatic angst.

In conclusion, if you’re looking to feel enraged and exhausted while simultaneously chuckling at Mafi’s writing quirks, then grab this book immediately! For those hoping for substance, perhaps consider picking up another series altogether. As for me, I’ll be following along with Layla as we plunge into the next book, fully aware of the chaos that awaits.
