Book Review of Under the Never Sky (Under the Never Sky, #1)

Book Review: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

It’s been six reads, and I’m already counting down to my seventh. Can a book truly have your heart? Because Under the Never Sky has mine, and it’s utterly delightful to experience that familiar warmth every time I dive back into its world. Veronica Rossi crafted an adventure that resonates with me deeply, making each encounter with Aria and Peregrine feel refreshing, yet comforting—a romantic escapade that feels just like coming home.

In a world ravaged by the Aether, a deadly storm system that destroys everything in its path, we meet Aria, a Dwellers girl who treasures the safety of her pod, Reverie. Yet, when her life is thrown into chaos, she’s thrust into the Outer Wasteland, where she encounters Peregrine, a fierce Outsider navigating his tumultuous reality. From their initial encounters filled with distrust to a poignant partnership, their journey is one of courage, self-discovery, and, of course, the slow-burn of romance—a trope I adore.

What captures me every time, even after multiple rereads, is how the narrative reveals deeper layers of the characters. On this sixth reread, I found myself nodding along when I read, “Perry imagined a world without fear.” This moment speaks volumes about the essence of bravery—not just in facing external threats but in confronting one’s vulnerabilities. Aria, initially perceived as weak, unveils her brave, intelligent nature beautifully as she navigates her new world. I was taken right back to some of those magical moments when I first fell in love with her character. Rossi’s ability to weave character growth in a dystopian setting makes her story feel genuine and relatable.

The pacing and writing style deserve applause. Rossi doesn’t rush through the world-building; instead, she invites readers to savor the atmosphere, as rich and intoxicating as the tension between Aria and Peregrine. Their complex relationship evolves organically, devoid of the forced drama often found in young adult romances. Instead, it’s marked by genuine emotions and moments that leave readers breathless. A particular quote that lingers with me is, “People can be the cruelest to those they love.” This simple yet profound sentiment reveals the layers of interpersonal connections Rossi explores so deftly throughout the trilogy.

The friendships, especially with Roar, add another enjoyable dimension. Their camaraderie lightens some of the darker themes, providing warmth and levity. Each character breathes life into the world, creating a tapestry of relationships that enriches the narrative.

This novel isn’t merely a story—it’s an experience. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone yearning for a beautifully crafted journey through a dystopian landscape filled with complex characters and an enchanting romance. If you’re seeking a book to escape into, while still reflecting on the intricacies of human emotions and growth, then Under the Never Sky is for you.

As I close the book for the sixth time, I’m reminded of the comfort it brings, despite its perilous world. I can’t wait to embark on this journey once more. Here’s to the next reread—and all the nostalgia and joy it’ll bring! ❤️
