Whimsy and Wonder: A Journey through The Folklore of Forever
There’s something about a small town filled with magic and mystery that draws me in, and The Folklore of Forever by Sarah Hogle had me enchanted from the start. As I dove into this whimsical tale, I was eager to explore the quirks of Moonville, Ohio, especially in a sequel that sparkles with sisterly bonds, ghostly escapades, and a sprinkle of skepticism.
In this installment, we meet Zelda Tempest, a paranormal skeptic who seems to stand in stark contrast to her family’s history of witchcraft. While her sisters are deep into their magical pursuits, Zelda earns a living by writing paranormal mysteries, all while firmly not believing in the supernatural. Her return to Moonville, which she hopes will shake off her writer’s block, unveils a delightful mess of ghost hunts and peculiar creatures lurking in the woods. It’s here she collides with Morgan Angelopoulos, a charming podcast host with a passion for ghost hunting. Their budding romance, sprinkled with quirky humor and tension, kept me flipping pages, laughing and rooting for their connection.
What struck me most about Hogle’s writing is its eccentricity. The narrative dances between enchanting moments and wild absurdities, appearing chaotic while maintaining an undercurrent of coherence. It feels like a literature version of a whimsical carnival ride—unexpected twists and turns that leave you both dizzy and delighted. The pacing sometimes felt all over the place, yet the chaotic charm kept me intrigued. As I read, I often thought of Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter—an oddball who, despite her quirks, holds the wisdom of enchantment.
One of my favorite aspects of Zelda’s character is her gradual evolution. As she ventures into the supernatural world, I felt her struggles mirror my own doubts about tradition versus belief. Moreover, the relationship between Zelda and Morgan unfolds beautifully, interspersed with genuine moments of clarity amid the quirky backdrop. The dialogue is sharp, witty, and at times, absurd, creating a connection that resonates with anyone who has found solace or intrigue in the unpredictable realm of love.
Though this book is a delightful romp, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. The whimsical, Cottagecore vibes and chaotic nature might feel a bit alien for readers like me who prefer dark and moody atmospheres. However, the wild humor tucked in during the latter parts of the book had me laughing out loud—unexpectedly entertaining moments that sealed the deal on my enjoyment.
As I wrap up my thoughts on The Folklore of Forever, I find myself surprisingly eager to explore the other stories in this intriguing series. Hogle has created a world where magic and comedy collide in a way that compels and perplexes. If you’re a fan of light-hearted mysteries with a healthy dose of supernatural charm, this book is undoubtedly worth a dive. The oddness, the whimsy, and the laughter will leave a delightful imprint, making it a curious addition to any reader’s collection.
Thank you to G.P. Putnam’s Sons for providing me with this wonderfully odd reading experience. I may be stepping out of my comfort zone, but I’m enchanted enough to yearn for the next tale from Moonville!
