Book Review of That Time I Took Down A Cult (Cozy Cult Cuties, #1)

That Time I Took Down A Cult (Cozy Cult Cuties, #1) by Q.M. Hargrove: An Engaging But Frustrating Journey

As soon as I stumbled upon Q.M. Hargrove’s That Time I Took Down A Cult, I was enticed by the premise. A cozy dark romance that intertwines cults, vengeance demons, and a protagonist named Buffy? I couldn’t resist! It felt like the perfect blend of whimsy and danger, like a giddy rollercoaster ride primed for thrills. But, oh boy, buckle up because this ride turned out to have some unexpected twists!

From the very first pages, I felt an exhilarating pull. The writing grabbed me fiercely, and I found the opening chapter a deliciously addictive blast—cult drama right from the outset! The setting was intriguing, and I was primed for excitement with our heroine, Buffy, diving deep into a world of demon-summoning and betrayal. Who wouldn’t be thrilled by the idea of a revenge demon named Wrath? Surely, the promise of danger and romance lay ahead, but as I read on, the thrill began to fade.

Buffy emerged as the centerpiece of the narrative. She’s a fierce protagonist, capable of taking names and asserting her power, but the book quickly became singularly focused on her exploration. The first-person perspective limited my view into the other characters, particularly Wrath. While his name alone sets up expectations for ruthless vengeance, he felt more like a conduit for Buffy’s thoughts than an active force of chaos. My initial excitement waned as I began to yearn for a more dynamic interaction between the two. Their connection simmered flatly, lacking the steamy tension one might expect from a dark romance.

Diving deeper into the narrative, I found myself frustrated by the pacing. After the intense start, the story stalled. With such a fiery introduction, I anticipated a swift plunge into action and vengeance, yet it felt as though I was being coaxed through a Brontë novel in a sitcom format. The pacing would have benefited greatly from a tighter edit—much of the text could have been trimmed without losing the charm.

I must admit, there was a light-heartedness to the prose that reminded me of a quirky filler episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While that show masterfully balanced dark themes with moments of levity, Hargrove’s approach felt somewhat unfocused—a mix of a cozy vibe with not enough of the gritty energy promised in the plot’s synopsis.

Despite these hiccups, there were moments of humor and intelligence woven into the fabric of the narrative that sparked joy. Some witty exchanges rang true, and both the cult’s absurdity and Buffy’s tenacity made me chuckle. It’s evident that Hargrove has a knack for crafting relatable characters and lively dialogue, but those magic sparks seemed eclipsed by the story’s uneven rhythm.

So, who might enjoy That Time I Took Down A Cult? If you’re a fan of whimsical dark tales combined with a splash of women’s lit—couched in a romance that occasionally falls short—this might just tickle your fancy. Those who love tales of empowerment, mixed signals, and quirky humor would find a bit of charm here.

For this reader, while it did provide some entertaining moments, the thrill ultimately faded. Creativity flourished, and it bursted with potential, but I couldn’t shake the feeling it could have been more. Here’s hoping for the next installment in the Cozy Cult Cuties series to find that elusive balance!
