Book Review of Red City (The New Alchemists, #1)

Finding Home: A Reflection on Red City by Marie Lu

As a girl who devoured Marie Lu’s YA novels during the heyday of my preteens in the 2010s, picking up her adult debut, Red City, felt like an unexpected reconnection with my past. Just when I thought I’d outgrown the captivating worlds she weaves, I found myself utterly entranced by this lush, haunting tale that touches on the most human of experiences: belonging, identity, and the bittersweet nature of sacrifice. If a book could reach across years and grab hold of your heart, this one did just that for me.

At the core of Red City are Ari and Sam, two young adults navigating the complex tapestry of their cultural identities and the heavy burdens carried by their families. Ari, recruited into the prestigious alchemist group known as the Lumines, leaves behind his family in India in pursuit of a life steeped in opportunity yet marred by the loss of his language and home. His journey is filled with both ambition and a poignant sense of loss that struck me deeply. Meanwhile, Sam, raised in a dystopian version of Los Angeles called Angel City, finds herself drawn into the rival alchemist group, Grand Central, as she fights for stability and safety for her struggling single mother. Their stories intertwine in such beautiful, heartbreaking ways, revealing the lengths we go to support our families and the often heavy costs of our choices.

Marie Lu’s exploration of the immigrant experience in Red City is both honest and emotive. She deftly captures the struggles of first-generation immigrants like Sam, who feels the weight of expectations and the harsh realities of a society that often overlooks her. The emotional gravity is palpable; the love they hold for their families is messy, tangled in the threads of obligation, guilt, and the quest for success. As someone who has often felt like an outsider bridging different worlds, I found Ari and Sam’s stories not just relatable but also profoundly resonant.

What truly captivated me was the intricacy of Lu’s world-building and her clever introduction of alchemy, which feels both grounded and fantastical. The alchemical battles and training sequences are creatively laid out, with a depth that adds to the stakes without overwhelming the narrative. I appreciated that Lu made alchemy a nuanced aspect of the story rather than merely a flashy tool. Her cinematic writing style brought Angel City alive, making it a character in its own right—gritty, layered, and rich with tension.

However, I found myself wishing for just a bit more screen time between Ari and Sam during their formative years. Their connection is built on significant emotional parallels and shared struggles, yet at times it felt like their relationship could have deepened further with a few additional scenes. This isn’t a fatal flaw by any means, but more of a longing for richer exploration of that foundation that would amplify the intensity of their adult feelings.

In closing, Red City stands out as a remarkable blend of thoughtful character exploration and intricate fantasy elements. It’s a book that sings with emotional undercurrents, inviting those who appreciate character-driven stories that aren’t afraid to venture deep into themes of identity, family, and power struggles. If you, like me, find solace in narratives that resonate on a personal level, Red City is sure to stay with you long after the last page is turned.
