Book Review of Power in Darkness (Supernatural Community #2)

Review of Power in Darkness (Supernatural Community #2) by Krista Street

When I first picked up Power in Darkness, I was fueled by the excitement from the inaugural installment of the Supernatural Community series. Krista Street’s knack for weaving captivating tales had hooked me, and I couldn’t resist diving into Daria’s journey once again. The allure of supernatural adventures, character dilemmas, and the promise of a deeper exploration into the mystical world kept me turning pages, eager to see how everything would unfold.

In Power in Darkness, Daria continues her journey of self-discovery within a world teeming with supernatural beings, and, boy, does she stumble into some tightly wound complexities! Her ignorance about her powers and the supernatural realm is almost dangerously charming, leading to quirky yet precarious situations. Seeing the gypsy from book one return, along with her dark prophecies, layered the story with intrigue. It complicates Daria’s healing and love life in ways that I was both thrilled and tense about.

However, while some sections read with an electrifying cadence, drawing me deep into the narrative, there was a palpable sense of dissatisfaction when I reached the final pages. The feeling of “Wait! This was it?” lingered long after I closed the book. It’s here that I felt the pacing falter; despite those electrifying few chapters at the end that sped up the action, the overall plot felt underwhelming. A part of me wished for more substantial revelations beyond the question, "Who is Crystal?"—a mystery I had already unraveled in the first book.

In terms of style, Street’s writing is undeniably smooth and infectious. It feels like a train, as the saying goes in my language, gliding effortlessly along the track of narratives. But even with the hot scenes and an expanded scope of the supernatural universe, the book often seemed like filler. The plot wasn’t entirely clear; perhaps this was intended to be a bridge to the more explosive events promised in book three.

While Power in Darkness is undoubtedly easier to digest than its predecessor, I couldn’t shake the feeling that it might’ve benefited from being paired with the third volume. The story flows well but leaves me yearning for a richer, more satisfying single experience rather than feeling like a chapter in a larger saga. It almost feels like an editing decision truncated the storytelling.

Nevertheless, I’m charmed enough by Daria and her crew to keep reading, especially since I’ve already dived headlong into book three, practically finishing it in a binge. The world Street has crafted is simply too enchanting to abandon, and I find myself wanting spin-offs—can we please have a Daniel spin-off or even a Dragon Trainer Xanthia tale?

In conclusion, Power in Darkness is perfect for readers looking for an enjoyable escape into a supernatural realm filled with quirky characters and tantalizing prophecies. While it may not provide the thrills and revelations that a sequel should ideally deliver, it still holds enough promise and intrigue to keep fans engaged. For anyone seeking an entertaining weekend read, Krista Street’s imagination certainly fuels my curiosity to explore both this series and her other works—here’s to hoping the next installment delivers the fireworks we’ve been waiting for!
