Book Review: Midlife Zombie Hunter (Forty Proof, #5) by Shannon Mayer
If you’re anything like me, you’ve found solace and laughter in the rich, entertaining world Shannon Mayer has crafted in her Forty Proof series. So, when Midlife Zombie Hunter dropped into my hands, I felt an irresistible pull. The title alone sparked my curiosity—who wouldn’t want to read about a zombie-hunting heroine right in the midst of navigating midlife? And, let’s just say, Mayer delivers once again, packing this installment with emotion, chaos, and a heck of a lot of heart.
This fifth book in the series welcomes back Bree, our tenacious, if somewhat frazzled, protagonist. She’s still figuring out her path amidst an onslaught of chaos—in this case, a parade of zombies invading the city. Who knew that discovering the meaning of life could coincide with dodging the undead? Mayer doesn’t shy away from hitting hard emotionally and comedically, creating a rollercoaster of feelings that had me both laughing out loud and clutching my heart.
The pacing of this book is impeccable; Mayer has a knack for weaving humor into intense situations seamlessly. From hilarious banter among Bree’s friends to the moments of sheer panic triggered by a zombie attack, I found myself firmly glued to the pages. You feel the tension rise and fall like a well-crafted heartbeat throughout the narrative. Notably, one of my favorite moments included Bree’s reflections on what ‘catching a break’ really means, which had me pondering my own life choices—right before a well-timed zombie appeared to break the tension.
Mayer’s writing is sprinkled with insightful quotes and delightful nuances, and there’s a particular line that resonates: “I’ve been hit with a one-two punch, but I can handle it. Just don’t hit me with another.” It’s almost as if the author can hear our collective gasps as we brace for what’s next. Spoiler alert: you might want to have some tissues handy because this book delivers emotional punches in ways you didn’t foresee coming.
And the ending? Wow. If you think you’re prepared for a cliffhanger, think again. Just when you think you know where Bree’s story is heading, Mayer throws a curveball that will leave you eagerly awaiting the next installment. If this book doesn’t have you begging for more, I don’t know what will.
Midlife Zombie Hunter isn’t just a fun romp through a post-apocalyptic world; it’s a poignant and illuminating exploration of midlife, resilience, and self-discovery. If you’ve been following Bree’s journey thus far, you certainly won’t want to miss this one. I wholeheartedly rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
Whether you’re a longtime fan of the series or new to Bree’s adventures, this book is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a mix of humor, heartache, and supernatural shenanigans. Grab a copy, settle in with your favorite snacks, and get ready to laugh, cry, and scream in delight. I can’t wait for the next adventure—here’s hoping Bree chooses wisely!
