Book Review of Eat, Pray, Hex (Crescent Moon Mysteries, #1)

Discovering the Magic in Eat, Pray, Hex

When I first came across Eat, Pray, Hex, the debut novel in the Crescent Moon Mysteries series by Tara Lush, I was intrigued. Although I hadn’t delved into Lush’s works before, this blend of cozy mystery and paranormal elements felt like an adventure waiting to unfold. As someone who usually stays within the bounds of traditional cozy mysteries, I decided to jump out of my comfort zone and explore this new tale—and I’m so glad I did!

The story revolves around Amelia, a relatable and endearing protagonist who unexpectedly inherits a hotel from an estranged aunt. Instead of simply selling the property, she finds herself drawn into a web of intrigue surrounding a cold case murder that occurred in the 1950s. This quaint Florida town, steeped in mysticism and eccentric characters, becomes a delightful backdrop for Amelia to uncover not just the secrets of the past, but also her own family’s intriguing paranormal history. Lush’s ability to weave the supernatural into the fabric of daily life made the setting feel both whimsical and real.

Throughout the narrative, the vibrant array of secondary characters added layers of diversity and depth to the quaint small-town vibe. I was especially taken with how Lush skillfully integrated representation while keeping the focus on the unfolding mystery. Though the cast was quite extensive, I never felt overwhelmed; instead, it felt like joining a quirky family where every individual had their own unique flair. Their quirks, coupled with Amelia’s growing awareness of her own powers, kept me eagerly turning the pages.

In terms of pacing, I discovered a bit of a hiccup with the audio format. The narration by Anna Maste had a lovely southern twang, but at times, it felt a little too leisurely for my taste. However, once I adjusted the speed to 1.5x, the story really picked up, and I was completely hooked! Maste’s portrayal of various accents and emotions added layers to the characters, enhancing the overall experience.

While the mystery itself wasn’t fraught with complexity, it served its purpose in introducing Amelia and her evolving powers, as well as the vibrant tapestry of the town. The resolution felt satisfying; the cold case was resolved, providing closure for the victim and the community. I found myself genuinely excited about where Amelia’s journey would take her next, and this leaves me curious about future installments.

In conclusion, Eat, Pray, Hex is a charming start to what promises to be an engaging series. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a sprinkle of the supernatural but without the scare factor, this book might just be perfect for you. For readers looking for a light-hearted escape with enchanting characters and a dash of intrigue, Tara Lush’s work is an inviting place to start. My adventure with Amelia has certainly left me eager for more!
