Book Review of Dead Last (Crossroads Queen, #3)

Dead Last (Crossroads Queen, #3) – A Mixed Bag of Magic and Mystique

As I dove into Dead Last, the third installment in the Crossroads Queen series by the talented Ms. Chase, I felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. After the whirlwind of events in the earlier books, I was eager to see how Lorelei’s journey would unfold. However, I quickly found myself in a perplexing situation, oscillating between moments of fascination and a surprising sense of disengagement.

Lorelei, our intrepid heroine, finds Fairhaven in disarray, with both magical and non-magical inhabitants struggling to find their peace. The premise is captivating: she smells a rat amidst the chaos and embarks on an investigation that leads her into the murky waters of favor with a powerful vampire gangster. It’s a classic trope that grips you with its potential for tension and intrigue. Yet, as I read on, I felt an underlying absence of urgency in the narrative.

The writing, as expected from Ms. Chase, is sparse and slightly terse, which is a style I usually appreciate for its precision. However, this time it seemed to stifle the emotional depth and engagement I yearned for, leaving me struggling to recall plot points just days after finishing the book. That’s never a good sign, especially when the stakes are meant to be so high.

Key elements such as the looming presence of The Corporation (cue sinister music) and an Investigator in town intrigued me, yet they somehow felt overshadowed by other narrative threads. Lorelei’s romance with the demon bar owner develops nicely—oh, the chemistry is palpable—but it comes to a jarring halt when he discovers her true nature. This reveal, while heavily foreshadowed, caught me off guard, showcasing Ms. Chase’s adeptness at weaving mythology into her tale. Kudos to her for that.

What I couldn’t shake off was the feeling that despite new characters and some action-packed scenes—like Lorelei dispatching the dream-eating monster—these elements didn’t amount to much in the grand scheme of things. They felt almost inconsequential, leaving me with an underwhelming sense of closure.

As this marks the halfway point in the planned sextet, I genuinely hope Ms. Chase ups the ante in the upcoming stories. The desire for a sizzling climax and continued character development is more pressing than ever, especially given the potential that remains untapped here.

So, who might enjoy Dead Last? If you’re a fan of urban fantasy with a dash of romance and a sprinkle of danger, you may find enough here to appreciate, especially if you’re already invested in Lorelei’s journey. However, if you’re seeking a novel that packs an emotional punch alongside its mythical escapades, you might find this third outing a tad underwhelming.

In the end, Dead Last left me with a bittersweet taste. I appreciate the world Ms. Chase has crafted, and I still hold on to the hope that the best is yet to come. Here’s to turning the page and diving into the next chapter!
