Review of Angel in Embers (Supernatural Community #4) by R.L. Olds

I don’t know about you, but there’s something inherently captivating about diving into a world where fantastical creatures roam freely, each with their own struggles and triumphs. R.L. Olds’ Angel in Embers has been on my radar for some time, but it was the promise of a climactic finale that truly drew me in. Knowing it was the last installment in the Supernatural Community series added a mix of anticipation and trepidation. Would it deliver? Spoiler alert: it did, and I emerged with plenty of emotions to unpack.

At its core, Angel in Embers follows Daria as she ventures into Logan’s hometown, grappling with the complexities of werewolf society. I was immediately intrigued by the portrayal of the supernatural hierarchy and how it reflected real-world issues of power dynamics and gender expectations. Daria’s frustration with the treatment of women in this world resonated with me deeply as she embarks on a mission to empower them—an empowering journey that made me cheer for her every step of the way.

Daria’s character transformation from the "lowest" supernatural being to the most powerful was one of the most rewarding arcs I’ve had the pleasure to read. It was thrilling to witness her uncover her strength, and I found myself rooting for the townspeople to finally recognize what she could offer. There’s a particular scene where she stands up to the alpha, and I can’t help but admire her bravery. It’s moments like these that remind us each person’s potential, regardless of societal labels.

Now, I must mention the pacing. While I loved the way Olds tied up all the loose ends, I did feel the narrative rushed at times. Certain plot points could have benefitted from a bit more breathing room, allowing the emotional stakes to settle fully. Yet, the poignant moments—such as Daria’s searching for her family’s ring—were beautifully written and struck a chord. When she discovers the ring’s true significance, I felt a mix of hope and despair wash over me.

As for the steaminess, let’s just say there are some sizzling scenes that I wasn’t prepared for! Olds deftly balances romance and realism, although I appreciated the warning about an almost-rape scene. It’s crucial to note this may be triggering for some readers, myself included, and serves as a poignant reminder of the darker realities that often loom in fantasy settings.

In short, if you crave a story that intertwines empowerment, love, and the struggle against oppressive systems, then Angel in Embers is worth your time. While I’m typically not drawn to werewolf-centric tales devoid of female transformation, Olds’ unique blend of angelic elements and strong character development kept me engaged throughout the series. I laughed, cried, and cheered, and honestly, who doesn’t want a reading experience that delivers such an emotional rollercoaster?
