Review of Ghost Business (Boneyard Key, #2) by Jen DeLuca

There’s something undeniably charming about a fun haunted romance, and Jen DeLuca’s Ghost Business had me captivated before I even turned the first page. Just look at that cover—adorable little ghosties dancing around a vibrant backdrop! It’s like a warm invitation to dive into the spooky, cozy world of Boneyard Key, Florida, which feels like it could be the perfect blend of my favorite Southern cities—Savannah, New Orleans, and Charleston. Having grown up near places known for their eerie tales, this setting immediately felt like home.

In her second installment of the Boneyard Key series, DeLuca introduces us to Sophie, a passionate ghost tour guide who pours her heart and soul into showcasing the haunting tales of her small town. However, trouble brews when Tristan arrives on the scene, launching a chain of ghost tours that prioritize entertaining fiction over authentic stories. This overt threat to Sophie’s livelihood creates a compelling tension, pushing her to fight tooth and nail for her cherished business. But amid the hustle and bustle of her entrepreneurial ambitions, will she be able to resist falling for Tristan?

What stood out to me was how DeLuca handles the theme of community support in the face of corporate invasion. You can feel the spirit of small-town camaraderie as locals rally around Sophie, reinforcing that there’s strength in unity. This message resonates deeply, especially today, when so many small businesses face challenges from larger companies. It’s refreshing to see a narrative that uplifts local endeavors, making you root for Sophie and her mission.

The ghosts in this story aren’t the spine-tingling specters you might expect. Instead, they are portrayed in a light, almost whimsical manner, aligning perfectly with the book’s overall cozy vibe. As much as I adore a good scare, I found this unique portrayal refreshing and engaging. It’s a delightful twist that sets Ghost Business apart from other ghostly tales.

However, I did feel that the romantic connection between Sophie and Tristan could have used a bit more depth. While they are both likable characters—each carrying their own quirks and charm—there wasn’t that electric chemistry or yearning that I usually crave in a slow-burn romance. Their relationship felt a little rushed toward the end, lacking the buildup that would have made their union more satisfying. Still, the story’s light-hearted nature made this a minor quibble in an otherwise enjoyable narrative.

If you love small towns, cozy ghost vibes, and a dash of romance, Ghost Business is a perfect pick for your reading list. It offers not just a fun escape but also a feel-good reminder of the power of community. Taking this journey with Sophie was delightful, and I came away feeling lighter and perhaps a bit more hopeful.
